A building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system consumes a lot of energy. Keeping schools in Arizona cool takes even more energy. The Marana School District, in an effort to reduce their energy costs and usage, has partnered with G & S Electric to provide upgrades to their current system.
The HVAC upgrades are responsible for increasing the districts energy efficiency and integrating green and sustainable technology into their facilities. The HVAC renovations will deliver a system designed to operate under a wide range of weather, occupancy and building use conditions to provide an ideal learning and teaching environment. The project included:
Upgrading over 200 HVAC units into energy efficient rated units
How does this help: As much as half of all energy used goes to heating and cooling. The high efficiency units are designed to use less energy with increased performance. The units also provide a healthier environment for students, teachers, staff, and parents as the improved filtration technology reduces fungus, mold, and virus particulates in the air and filter out nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and other air pollutants.
Upgrading over 20 variable frequency drives
How does this help: Variable frequency drives are used in ventilation systems in schools. Variable frequency motors on fans save energy by allowing the volume of air moved to match the system demand. As AC motor driven applications do not require full speed, energy can be saved by controlling the motor with a variable speed drive. The energy cost savings due to this upgrade are significant as the motor is consuming only 25% as much power.
Upgrading to High Efficiency Boilers
How does this help: Boilers are designed to heat water and provide either hot water or steam for heating. Steam boilers operate at a high temperature and are generally not very efficient. By upgrading the boilers to become highly efficient more of the energy can be turned into heat and less of it is lost or escapes. The high efficiency boilers that were installed used about 10% less energy than a standard boiler.
