The official start of summer is still two months away, but temperatures in the desert are already starting to rise and with them, the cost of your home’s electrical bill. Energy usage during the summer months is typically higher than the rest of the year. Luckily there are some steps that you can take to reduce your usage, resulting in some big savings on your bill. Here are some valuable tips from the experienced electricians at G & S Electric on reducing energy costs at home:

Unplug unused devices – devices that stay plugged in to the wall when turned off still draw a small amount of energy, costing the average American household loses up to $200 a year in wasted electricity.

Use computers sleep mode – when your computer is not in use, activate the sleep or hibernate mode. Sleep modes can save up to 90% of energy used if the computer were left on. To save even more electricity, completely power down the computer and unplug it when not in use.

Turn lights off – encourage those living in your home to turn off electronics and lights when leaving a room. Before leaving the house make a quick walkthrough to check that all lights have been turned off.

Control the temperature – during summer it is recommended to keep the thermostat set around 78 degrees. Adding blinds to windows and sliding glass doors will aid in insulating the home from outside heat.

Reducing your energy usage during the summer is easy and can result in big savings on your energy bill. Every kilowatt-hour saved equals about 10 cents, so saving more means more money in your pocket. For more tips on reducing your electric bill contact G & S Electric at 602-493-1135.

G & S Electric has recently donated time and labor to PLC Charter School, located in Tolleson, AZ, to install a 32 KW solar system on the school’s gymnasium. The installed system is designed to help cut electricity costs and power the building, incluing the very important air conditioning system. The new solar system will save the school an estimated $5,000 anually in electricity costs.

For the project multiple local companies volunteered their time and the necessary materials to help the school. G & S Electric was pleased to be involved in the project and give back to the community. The time and labor donated by G & S accounted for approximately $20,000 in labor and materials.

Following the completion of the project the school held a dedication ceremony with students, parents, staff and the volunteer team that completed the installation. At the ceremony students were taught about solar energy and were able to ask questions about the project and how they can be more ‘green’ in their own lives.

The state of the art solar system is the first step in helping PLC Charter School achieve greater energy savings. School officials are planning on adding more solar panels to the campus in the future. G & S Electric is proud to help PLC Charter School reduce their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient.

You likely know how to replace a light bulb on your own, but what about replacing circuit breaker? There may be times when you encounter electrical problems and are unsure of whether you should call an electrician or attempt the project yourself. To help, the expert electricians at G & S Electric have compiled a list of electrical problems that require a professional. A basic rule to always remember: if you are dealing with any type of voltage and unsure of how to proceed, contact an electrician.

Apart from basic electrical tasks, like replacing switches, call a licensed electrician to complete the job. Here are some examples of times you should call an electrician:

Wiring projects

Replacing circuit breakers

When appliances around the house turn on and the lights dim

If you smell electricity burning

Adding new outlets

Any electrical project you do not fully understand how to complete on your own

Any time the electricity is being worked on in your home, by a professional or yourself, the other occupants of the home should be notified to prevent them from interfering with the work or causing an accident. Electricians are trained professionals and have the experience necessary to safely work with electricity in your home.

G & S Electric offers electrical and solar services across Arizona. If you have a project involving electricity, stay safe and call a professional electrician. Contact us or call (602) 493-1135 to schedule an appointment.

When the local electrical workers union selected G & S Electric for solar panel installation in Arizona on the union building, we knew we were doing something right. The recently completed project will provide IBEW Local 640 with solar energy for its central Phoenix building.

The installed system, a 25kw DC commercial solar system, is designed to power large commercial buildings and reduce energy costs. The project also demonstrates to the community and union members IBEW Local 640’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The project was designed to injected money back into the economy using union member installers and only American made solar products.

During the planning process special design considerations were made to preserve the buildings historical status, as the building is registered as an architectural landmark in Phoenix. Designers and installers took special care to ensure the panels were placed in a custom design as not to detract from the building aesthetic appeal.

The President of G & S says “I am honored that we were asked to do this by the Local 640 as Jaysen Fails (Owner of G & S Electric) has been a member of this union for over 32 years. He started his first day of work with this union over 32 years ago where he completed his apprenticeship.”

G & S Electric offers both commercial and residential solar installation in Arizona. If you are interesting in renewing your environmental commitment to green business practices or are looking to save on your electric bill at home, we can provide you with solar installation in Arizona. Contact us to learn more about solar installation in Arizona.

A building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system consumes a lot of energy. Keeping schools in Arizona cool takes even more energy. The Marana School District, in an effort to reduce their energy costs and usage, has partnered with G & S Electric to provide upgrades to their current system.

The HVAC upgrades are responsible for increasing the districts energy efficiency and integrating green and sustainable technology into their facilities. The HVAC renovations will deliver a system designed to operate under a wide range of weather, occupancy and building use conditions to provide an ideal learning and teaching environment. The project included:

Upgrading over 200 HVAC units into energy efficient rated units

How does this help: As much as half of all energy used goes to heating and cooling. The high efficiency units are designed to use less energy with increased performance. The units also provide a healthier environment for students, teachers, staff, and parents as the improved filtration technology reduces fungus, mold, and virus particulates in the air and filter out nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and other air pollutants.

Upgrading over 20 variable frequency drives

How does this help: Variable frequency drives are used in ventilation systems in schools. Variable frequency motors on fans save energy by allowing the volume of air moved to match the system demand. As AC motor driven applications do not require full speed, energy can be saved by controlling the motor with a variable speed drive. The energy cost savings due to this upgrade are significant as the motor is consuming only 25% as much power.

Upgrading to High Efficiency Boilers

How does this help: Boilers are designed to heat water and provide either hot water or steam for heating. Steam boilers operate at a high temperature and are generally not very efficient. By upgrading the boilers to become highly efficient more of the energy can be turned into heat and less of it is lost or escapes. The high efficiency boilers that were installed used about 10% less energy than a standard boiler.

The improved HVAC system will help the Marana School District achieve greater energy savings while requiring minimal maintenance. G & S Electric is proud to help the Marana School District reduce their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient.

If you are interested in replacing older or inefficient HVAC equipment to lower your energy costs and reduce your carbon footprint contact G & S Electric, serving all of Arizona’s solar and HVAC needs.

After nearly three years of work G&S Electric is proud to announce the completion of Phase 4 of the solar panel installation project at Arizona State University. Phase 1 of the project began in November 2008 and 20 G & S employees have worked to provide the campus with solar energy.

Over 8,750 panels each rated at 230 watts DC or more have been installed as part of an overall effort to by ASU to transition to renewable energy systems for its power. G&S Electric has retrofitted 16 buildings at the ASU Tempe campus which are now equipped with solar panels including the Carson Student Athletic Center, the Hayden Library, and the Student Services buildings. The system will generate over 3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. The average home in Tempe uses 9,400 kWh per year.

ASU has developed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) where the system is owned by investors and they sell the created power back to ASU at a fixed price.
